The city of Vejer was built in the 15th Century as part of the defense investment after the Christian reconquest of the region. It covers an area of four acres.

The walls are very much still intact and you can climb up on to them at various points. The original gateways still exist & form a feature of the everyday life of Vejer.


The Sancho IV Arch is the oldest & probably the best preserved gate to the old town.

Located in the Plaza De Espagne, the Arco de la Villa is the main archway into Vejer. Originally this was the termination of the old Roman road up from La Barca.

Puerta Cerrada, “the closed gate” was supposedly the most susceptible to attack from the south -

Located close to the church, the Puerta de la Segur – was the lowest and best fortified of the archways.
